We are approaching the middle of September. It is another busy month for the Bacularis project. If you are interested in what has been happening in the project, this report is for you. We invite you to read on.

New release 6.5.0

At the beginning of September, as planned, we released Bacularis 6.5.0. The main new feature of this release is Restore Verification, which makes it possible to automatically check whether data can be successfully restored from a backup.

The release also brings support for the upcoming Bacula 17.0, updated French translations, and several other improvements.

Thank you for all your feedback and for the positive reception of this release. We hope the new features will be useful to you.

New release 6.5.1

Shortly after the release of 6.5.0, two security vulnerabilities were reported. To address them, we prepared Bacularis 6.5.1 with the necessary fixes.

At the same time, we carried out additional security checks and introduced several changes to further strengthen the existing protections.

We encourage users of affected earlier versions to update to Bacularis 6.5.1.

What we are working on

We are currently carrying out a broader security review. This work includes reviewing how data is processed, strengthening existing protections, and standardizing secure data-rendering patterns throughout the application.

The results of this review will be included in an upcoming maintenance release.

New Restore Verification series

We have also started working on a multi-part series of articles and video materials about Restore Verification.

Our goal is to introduce the new verification features to everyone interested in this area. Restore Verification is a broad topic, so we would like to present it step by step, covering both the concepts behind it and its practical use.

We started the series with the first article, "The green check mark is not enough: Why a successful backup is only part of the story". More parts of the series will follow soon.

What is next

After completing the current security review, we plan to release the previously mentioned Bacularis 6.5.2.

After that, we will begin preparing the changes for the next feature release, Bacularis 6.6.0. Its main focus will be new features related to ransomware detection and backup verification. We already have several interesting ideas that we would like to explore as part of this work.

This time, we are not providing an approximate release date for 6.6.0 yet. Our current priority is to complete the ongoing security work. Once this work is finished, we would like to return to our usual release cycle of approximately one month.
