The July Bacularis Project Report is available. Find out what's happening at Bacularis.
Hello Community,
It has been almost a month since the last Bacularis project report. It has been a very productive time for the Bacularis team. We have managed to get a lot done, and there is still quite a lot ahead of us. We invite you to read the July project report.
We prepared a new, refreshed look for the web interface. This is quite a significant change, and we are very happy with the result. We hope you like the new look and feel as well.
Thank you for all the feedback we have already received and for the feedback that is still coming in. It is very valuable to us. It is also worth mentioning that this topic is not closed, and you are still welcome to share your comments, ideas, and suggestions for further improvements.
In June, we released version 6.3.0 with the new interface and several smaller improvements. We spent a lot of time preparing the upgrade process to make it as smooth as possible, which was not simple with such significant visual changes. It looks like this work paid off, as so far we have not received any reports of problems with upgrading to version 6.3.0.
We have also done something we had never done before in the project. We launched a special support program for public sector organizations. Through this program, eligible public institutions can receive free access to repositories with the latest Bacularis packages. More details are available on the program page here:

On the development side, we are currently working on modernizing existing functionality and preparing new features. As part of this modernization work, we have almost completely replaced the API client used by the web interface, refactored the Bacularis session management modules, and fully modernized the code of the data restore wizard.
These changes were needed not only because the mentioned modules required updates to newer standards. They also provide an important foundation for the new features we want to develop in future versions. Thanks to this work, new functionality will be built on a solid base that should remain up to date for the coming years.
The main thing ahead of us now is version 6.4.0. All the changes mentioned above are already ready, so we can now focus on preparing and delivering new functionality.
One of the new features will be a new mode in the data restore wizard, called simple mode. It will allow users to quickly restore the data they need without using the Bacula BVFS interface.
Both approaches will be available side by side. The advanced mode, using BVFS and its full capabilities, will remain available for users who need it. The new simple mode, on the other hand, will use restore operations performed through Bconsole restore commands and is intended to make the restore process easier in cases where BVFS may not be the most optimal approach.
Members of the community have mentioned many times that, under certain conditions, Bacula BVFS can be less than ideal for some restore scenarios. Now is the time to improve that experience.
We would like to release version 6.4.0 by the end of July. We hope everything goes according to plan. Thank you for every bit of support, every signal, and every helping hand. It means a lot to us and helps make Bacularis better.
See you in the next project report.
On behalf of the Bacularis Team,
Marcin Haba
